What is Coarse Hair?
There seems to be a lot of confusion over the definition of coarse hair.
Coarse hair consists of thick, strong strands that can be resistant. It
doesn't not refer to the feeling of your hair between your fingers. This means that hair that is
"rough feeling" or "kinky/curly" is not necessarily coarse hair. You can have kinky hair
that is also fine or medium hair. Coarse hair strands have the largest
circumference, whereas fine hair strands have the smallest circumference.
Because coarse hair is bigger in diameter it, has more substance, is harder
to bend when combing into place,
harder to bend when blow drying; it is simply stronger. This makes it more
difficult to process and tends to be resistant to hair coloring services, perming and straightening.
Some individuals may have all three types of hair, coarse, medium and fine,
on their head. It is important to remember that coarse hair is not specific
to one group of people. Ethnicity is irrelevant in determining your hair
texture. Individuals who loose their hair during cancer treatments often
find their returning "new" hair is courser, wavier and harder to bend then
their original hair.
